OUTLINE FOR DESCRIPTION OF ROTATION

 

 

ROTATION:                Ophthalmology

 

PRECEPTORS:            Drs. Murphy, Flickinger, Lochen, McCormick, Butler and Bernstein

 

COORDINATOR:        Dr. Murphy

 

DURATION:                2 - 4 Weeks

 

 

1.         GOALS/OBJECTIVES OF ROTATION:

            --- Understand the role of FP, ophthalmologists, and optometrists, in eye care.

            --- Eye anatomy, exams, fundoscopic findings, common diseases and treatment.

            --- Know common and uncommon reasons for ophthalmologic referral.

 

2.         EXPECTATIONS OF ROTATION:

            --- Attend clinic daily at the ophthalmologist’s office when not in FP clinic.

            --- Participate in exams as much as possible.

            --- Rotate among preceptors to see interesting findings.

            --- Optionally you may want to spend at least one morning watching surgery. 

 

3.         SUGGESTED PREPARATION/REFERENCES:

                        --- The Physician’s Guide to Eye Care - Produced by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (an excellent resource with pictures highlighting the basic concepts in ophthalmology)

                        --- Basic Ophthalmology for Medical Students and Primary Care Residents - Also produced by the American Academy of Ophthalmology – a little cheaper and still a good resource

 

4.         TYPICAL DAY/WEEK:

            --- 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

            --- Surgical variable.

 

5.         WORK-UPS/WRITE-UPS:

            --- None required.

 

6.         PROCEDURES:

            --- Ophthalmoscopy.

            --- Slit lamp (cornea only).

            --- Tonopen – used to obtain ocular pressures (ask to get some experience)

            --- Foreign body and rust ring removal (possibly).

 

7.         AVAILABLE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES/CONFERENCES:

            --- May attend relevant conferences at MCW or Milwaukee Ophthalmological Society.

 

8.         IMPACT ON FAMILY PRACTICE, NOON CONFERENCE SCHEDULES:

            --- None expected.

 

 

9.         CALL:

                        --- None, unless the resident elects to take call for interesting ER cases. This might be an opportunity to do more slit lamp exams and FB removal.

 

10.        WEEKEND REQUIREMENTS:

            --- None unless elected by the resident.

 

11.        VACATION/TIME OFF:

            --- One week of vacation is allowed per 4 week rotation

 

12.        EVALUATION:

            --- Active participation in clinic, consistent attendance, and interest in learning.

 

13.        CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION:

            --- Attendance in clinic, active learning.

 

14.        SUPERVISION:

            --- By ophthalmologists in clinic.
