FOR DESCRIPTION OF ROTATION
ROTATION: Procedures
(Elective)
RESPONSIBLE
FACULTY: David L. Fay, M.D.
DURATION: 2-4 Weeks
1. GOALS/OBJECTIVES OF ROTATION:
--- Enhance resident competency and comfort
in performing a variety of procedures including: Flexible sigmoidoscopy;
colposcopy; vasectomy; EKG's; minor dermatologic surgery; casting; treadmill
stress tests. Residents may tailor rotation to needs/desires.
2. EXPECTATIONS OF ROTATION:
--- Must develop a written plan of goals and
schedule of procedures to learn before the rotation starts (submit to Dr. Fay
for approval).
--- Attend as many program functions as
possible while balancing that with the need to obtain an adequate number of
procedures.
3. REQUIRED PREPARATION AND REFERENCES:
--- Colposcopy curriculum and slides.
--- Flexible sigmoidoscopy curriculum and
slides.
4. TYPICAL DAY/WEEK:
--- Attend clinics and procedures whenever
and wherever possible. WFPC clinics should be p.m.'s whenever possible; most
procedures are scheduled in the a.m. Complete days or night clinics may be
helpful.
5. WORK-UPS/WRITE-UPS:
--- None.
6. PROCEDURES:
--- See attached Procedures Schedule for
times available.
7. AVAILABLE EDUCATIONAL
EXPERIENCES/CONFERENCES:
--- All normal program conferences.
8. IMPACT ON OFFICE SCHEDULE:
--- WFPC clinics should be p.m.’s whenever
possible.
9. CALL:
--- May do clinic call.
10. WEEKEND REQUIREMENTS:
--- None.
11. VACATION/TIME OFF:
--- One week off if 4 week rotation.
12. EVALUATION:
--- Preceptors to fill out individual
procedure evaluations.
13. CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION:
--- Submit documentation of procedures done.
--- Get
2 or 3 evaluations from preceptors worked with frequently.
14. SUPERVISION:
--- Various volunteer faculty, discuss with
Dr. Fay.
15. COMMENTS:
Rotation is very dependent on the resident being very aggressive on scheduling and arriving at preceptors
locations for procedures, to take full advantage of rotation. Each resident
shall need permission from and supervision by preceptors to do procedures. See
list of resources, below.
--- Suction Curettage:
Let
attendings know interest.
--- Flexible Sigmoidoscopy:
May need to observe some flex sigs before being allowed to "drive".

--- Colposcopy:
Schedules
are fairly erratic; need to call and confirm prior to each month by the
resident taking the rotation.

--- Minor Dermatologic Surgery:
WMH
Surgeons at outpatient: Catch as catch can; may be erratic.
--- EKG's: 7am – 9pm daily at WMH with IM's; need to
confirm prior to rotation.
--- Stress
Tests:
Daily at
WMH; confirm with cardiologist prior to rotation, especially Drs. Saeian, Zarling,
Katib, Burns, and Singh.
--- Casting:
Moreland
Ortho: M, T, F - call Cindy at clinic
and ask if there are opportunities that day (if no other resident).
