By 2030, the number of people who are at least 65 years old is expected to be more than 71 million, more than twice their number in 2000. The fastest growing segment of our nation’s population are those who are 85 years old or more - up to 20 million individuals by 2050. Currently, older patients already make up about 25% of office visits to the average family physician. Obviously, this percentage will continue to rise. We have developed a longitudinal curriculum to prepare our graduates to provide the highest quality care for their older patients. This multi-faceted experience starts in the Family Medicine outpatient clinic where residents care for their own panel of older patients with the assistance of faculty members. Our nurse practitioner will accompany residents making home visits during which skills such as functional and home-safety assessments are practiced.
