Text Box: Sports medicine is growing in its popularity, both among physicians and patients. As more and more Americans try to stay healthy by exercising, their risk of sports related injury also increases. Physicians with expertise in this area can provide excellent care and get patients back to an active lifestyle quickly. Here at Waukesha we are uniquely situatated to give residents an outstanding experience in sports medicine. The centerpiece of this experience is when each resident is called upon to be the team physician for Carroll College. During this time, residents spend time on the field and in the training room working directly with the athletes. Assisted by the sports trainers and orthopedic doctors, they tend to all the health needs of the athletes. We also annually offer sports medicine physicals at the local high schools doing over 200 exams. For those residents Text Box: who want more, one can sign up to be a team physicians for one of the local high schools. Beginning year one, some residents have worked with the local physicians covering high school football games, when they feel they are ready, they are encouraged to cover the game on their own with phone backup, giving them a real-world experience. Opportunities for sports medicine abound in the Waukesha area.  The Waukesha area has 8 high schools within a 20 minute drive and 1 college right in town.  All of the orthopedic physicians are willing and eager have residents work with them to provide coverage at the games and in the training room.  I’ve had the opportunity to work with Mukwonago High School for three years and have been able to attend nearly all home and away games.  The program has been supportive of my sports medicine interests.  I’ve learned a great deal about sports medicine, increased my confidence in working with adolescents, and had a great time at the games.
