Rotation Options :

First/Second Year Students:
M-1-2 Summer Extern Program (WAFP)

Clinic participates in this program through the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians. One student (who is between his/her first and second year of medical school) per year for the months of June and July. Total of 5 students have done this program at Waukesha to date.

Per month, student participates in:

  • 20- 24 clinic sessions
  • 4-6 TS morning rounds
  • 1 day of OB call, including postpartum morning rounds the following day
  • 1 day in the ER at WMH
  • 2-3 sessions with key ancillary personnel (diabetic educators, AODA counselors, chaplain).
  • Also participates in nursing home visits, residents’ educational conferences, All Staffs and clinic events.

Student primarily observes; takes initial patient history. Emphasis on relating basic science to the disease process and “basic” history and physical skills.

First/Second Year Students:
M-1 Clinical Continuum (Mentor Program)

Number of students: 5 per year.

Mentor program for first and second year MCW students. Faculty are matched with a student and the student spends one session per month with the faculty member in clinic. The experience provides students with relevant clinical experience to observe and participate in real patient care situations. This is meant to provide immediacy and reality to the other learning activities of the MCW program and to basic science learning. The relationship with the Mentor also supports the students’ professional socialization and development.

Third Year Students:
M-3 Ambulatory Medicine Clerkship – DFCM

24 students/year (2 students per month, 12 months per year)

Course goals and objectives

  1. Strengthen interpersonal/communication skills with patients
  2. Strengthen H&P skills and the need for focused H&P’s for common problems
  3. Develop skills in generalized problem solving
  4. Become familiar with common problems in primary care
  5. Understand the scope of family practice
  6. Appreciate continuity of care

Required Activities:

  1. Problem Based Learning sessions given by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin (2 per week)
  2. Clinic Sessions at Waukesha Family Practice Clinic (8 per week)
  3. Nurse Home visit (1/2 day)
  4. One day/night of OB call
  5. Family Practice morning report (2 per week)
  6. Video tape one patient interaction to review history taking and rapport building skills.
  7. Review a complete exam with primary faculty or resident.

Fourth Year Students Elective:
Family Medicine: An Inpatient/Outpatient Experience

Number of students: 26 since 1995; average of 3 per year.

Students spend 3-4 afternoons/week in clinic seeing patients; the remainder of the time is spent with TS at WMH. Optional activities: nursing home visits, practice management activities, attend educational conferences.

Learning Activities:

  • Participate as sub-intern in the daily inpatient teaching service rounds at WMH.
  • Attend semi-weekly teaching service conferences and present patients.
  • Independently evaluate patients and formulate initial assessment and treatment plan under the guidance of faculty preceptors and residents.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • History and physical exam skills
  • Understanding of the role of psychosocial factors in illness and patient compliance
  • Understanding of the role and tools of the effective family physician
  • Ability to formulate an appropriate patient assessment and effective treatment plan.

Fourth Year Students Elective:
Apprenticeship with a Master Physician

Number of students per year – 3 this year.

This elective is offered by MCW only 3 times per year. Students select the MCW faculty member they would like to work with.

Time at WFPC: Approximately 20 clinic sessions for one month. The students are scheduled with their faculty member whenever possible when he/she is in clinic during that month, plus other optional activities (TS, OB, educational conferences).

Goals:

  • Independently take patient history and perform physical exam.
  • Master principles of effective and efficient interviewing.
  • Practice effective physical diagnosis maneuvers for common physical findings.
  • Construct prioritized differential diagnoses and appropriate management plans.
  • Display appropriate communications skills, including respect/empathy for patients and clinical staff, and understanding of cross-cultural issues.
